42. I Spy…

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Dedicated to COARIN.

Khalid and I are currently right in the middle screaming match. It’s hot and stuffy and this drive is taking too long. My father for some reason cannot drive with the windows open which is just making this place more stifling. To top that of, this fat lump decides that besides the fact that he is taking so much of space, he still needs to sleep half on top of me.

I was already irritable and moody so this obviously caused me to snap. Please don’t start with my anger issues story, I’m so not in a mood for it. Anyway, I got mad and slapped him which resulted in this screaming match.

Eventually mummy got fed up and threatened, “If the 2 of you don’t stop fighting now, I’m going to come and sit there in the middle then it will worse. Stop acting like spoilt brats! There’s two of you and three seats.”

Mummy then distracted us by playing with us a game of ‘I Spy.’

“I spy with my little eye something beginning with H,” mummy began. “House…horse…hijaab…hands…handbag?!”

“Handbag! I can’t believe I didn’t get that!” I grumbled in displeasure at the fact that Khalid got it right.

“I spy with my little eye something beginning with T.” Khalid said.

“Teeth,” I finally guessed. Trust Khalid to choose something like that. Excited that I got it right I decided 2 letters would be more difficult. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with WS.

“Warm scarves…wide shoes…water scenery…wide smile….warm sun……wilted sunflower…Water? Warm? Windy? Wilted? Wide? Wet? Wash? Wipe? Wall? Wind? Wind….Screen!”

Keeping with my double letters daddy chose ‘CE.’ We were totally stumped. We finally resorted to guessing each separately. “Car..cover…cubby…camera…cooler…coffee…creepy..catchy…caddy..call…cage…cap..can..child..chips? Eat..exit..entrance…empty..egg..ever..elder..excellerator…enemy..ever?

“We give up!”

“Cat eyes.” Daddy said. “But there’s no cats here, you cheated!” We accused. Daddy laughed and explained, “Look at those lights in the middle of the road, they glow in the dark so they are called cat eyes. I wasn’t referring to real cats but to that.”

And we finally reached. Catching sight of Dadi’s house I exclaimed, “Alhamdulillah!” I then recited the dua to be read upon reaching one’s destination. I got out of the car and threw myself onto the lawn. This is one more journey we survived without killing each other.

Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath I savoured the crisp fresh air. I kicked of my shoes because I loved the feeling of grass beneath my bare feet. A smile spread across my face at this feeling of bliss. Best of all was the knowledge that in dadi’s and dada’s house you get your way.

Ahead of me was a week of being spoilt rotten by the people who I’ve had wrapped around my finger since birth. This was the thought that soon caused me to jump up and run into the house screaming like a lunatic, “Dadi! Dada!”

Dua upon reaching one’s destination:

رب أنزلني منزلا مباركا وأنت خيرالمنزلين

Rabbi Anzilni munzilam mubaraka wa anta khairul munzileen

“My lord has caused me to set foot in a blessed land and you are the best of those who bring me to this land.”

Just aspiring to inspire through the pen, or should I say, keyboard. May Allah Ta’ala accept my efforts and make it a source of Hidayah for the Ummah.
